Hope on the border

The sprawling city of Tijuana sits on the Mexican side of the United States border in Baja, California. Since 1980 Tijuana’s population has trebled as Mexicans, flocking to cross into the USA, get stuck in this ever-burgeoning metropolis.

Children in Tijuana live amongst endemic crime and poverty, exacerbated by Mexico’s crippling drugs wars. The crumbling school system is unable to keep up with their basic educational needs.

One charity helping to provide Tijuana’s children with a brighter future is Didaque Ministries.  Didique believe that every child deserves the opportunity to study in a clean, structured, Christ-centred learning environment and their aim is to “form and assist purposeful and quality, Spanish-speaking Christian academic institutions.”

Didaque’s first project involves working alongside the private Christian elementary school, Centro Pedagógico Didaque. Didaque is involved in a range of activities from building a new school building to helping children get to school via a new school bus. I was particularly struck by Didaque’s focus on arts and music and their interest in helping children with special needs, who often get left behind and have few support systems in Mexico.

I first began supporting Didaque in 2015 and sent the charity the following request:

Please use my funds for a speech therapist and/or add to the music program. Music can make children speak!!!”

You can therefore imagine how excited I was to receive this recent feedback from Ben who manages the school:

Hi Anomi, I thought you’d like to know that I just used up the remainder of the gift you sent to help purchase choir risers. These are going to be absolutely amazing for our musical this July (and concerts to come!). Thank you so much!

Such wonderful feedback is a reminder to me of why it matters to give with purpose. It is important to know that my contribution has directly benefitted something that I value. It helps bring me closer to the project and has inspired me to share the story of Didaque with others.

If you’d like to help this wonderful project and the work they are doing to bring a brighter future to Mexican children please visit their web site http://didaque.org.

p.s. I support purposeful giving around the world via my own organisation, the Ant Foundation. Contributions are always welcome to the campaigns we support and please note that corporate donations can be to local and international charities.  However, before making a donation tax relief eligibility should be verified with the country tax authority.
