Keeping it in the family

Food is one of the great constants in my life, connecting me to my home country of Sri Lanka and to my family’s work in restaurants for over three decades. Whether it was watching my parents cook or my time spent helping-out in the kitchen, my formative memories have been centred on our family restaurant, Ceylon Inn in Graceville.

However, my career, up until very recently, had nothing to do with restaurants. The world of big business and asset management is about as far removed from hospitality and service as you can get. Before he passed away, my father asked if I could look to keep the Graceville restaurant in the family. So, when the opportunity arose to buy Ceylon Inn, I jumped at the chance.

Now, on top of running an asset management company, I’m a restaurant owner. It’s an interesting mix, but I can see that I am learning and gaining rich experiences from the crossover. I recently sat down to talk about this experience and why it has been important to keep Ceylon Inn in the family. You can see the video here.
